Calm, comfortable care — you set the pace.

Nitrous Oxide

The most accessible form of sedation we offer.

Nitrous oxide — commonly called laughing gas — is a safe, mild sedative inhaled through a small nasal mask during your appointment. It takes effect within minutes, producing a sense of calm and ease while keeping you fully conscious and able to communicate with us throughout.

When the mask is removed at the end of your appointment, the effects wear off within minutes. Most patients can drive themselves home afterward. It’s a simple, low-barrier option that makes a real difference for patients who struggle with dental anxiety.

Nitrous oxide is a good fit if you:

  • Feel anxious or tense at dental appointments

  • Have had a difficult experience at the dentist in the past

  • Have a sensitive gag reflex

  • Need a longer procedure and want to stay relaxed throughout

  • Want to take the edge off without feeling heavily sedated

Our Approach to Anxiety

We go beyond the nitrous.

Sedation is one tool — but how we approach an appointment matters just as much. At Hillside, we explain every step before we do it, take breaks whenever you need them, and never rush. You’re always in control.

If you haven’t been to the dentist in years because of anxiety, we’d rather start with a conversation than dive straight into treatment. Tell us what your experience has been like, what makes you most nervous, and we’ll build the appointment around that.

There’s no judgment here. We’ve seen patients who haven’t been to the dentist in 10 years because of fear. Getting through the door is the hard part — the rest we can work through together.

Common Questions

What patients ask about sedation.

  • No. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative — you’ll feel relaxed and at ease, but you’ll remain fully awake, conscious, and able to communicate with us throughout the appointment. You can respond to questions and tell us at any point if something isn’t comfortable.

  • Yes — one of the advantages of nitrous oxide is that the effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask. Most patients drive themselves home without any issue. This is different from oral conscious sedation, which would require a driver.

  • Yes. Nitrous oxide has been used safely in dentistry for well over a century and is appropriate for adults and children alike. We monitor you throughout the appointment and adjust the level as needed.

  • Coverage varies by plan. Some PPO plans cover nitrous oxide as a separate benefit; others don’t. We’ll check your coverage and let you know the cost upfront. Most patients find it well worth the out-of-pocket cost for the peace of mind it provides.
